FREE TAX PREPARATION
Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA)
The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program provides free basic tax filing services and e-filing by IRS-certified volunteers who prepare current tax year and past year tax returns for low-to-moderate income taxpayers during the tax filing season (typically January 2 – April 15). Volunteers can inform taxpayers about tax credits such as the Earned Income Tax Credit and the American Opportunity Tax Credit. Select volunteers are allowed to provide expanded tax preparation, such as Schedule A, Schedule B, Schedule C, and Schedule D.
Ohio Benefit Bank (OBB) Program
The Ohio Benefit Bank (OBB) tax program provides volunteers who prepare basic tax returns during the filing season for low-to-moderate income taxpayers. Volunteers utilize software that prompts the volunteer to ask the taxpayer questions regarding their income and expenses to ensure an accurate return. The software can also be used to screen for potential eligibility for government benefit programs, such as food stamps and prescription assistance programs. Volunteers can prepare returns for the current tax year and up to three years prior.
Tax volunteers offer free income tax preparation via appointment or the drop-off program at the main agency in Piketon and at the Senior Center in Waverly. Appointments are available by calling the main agency at 740-289-2371 beginning January 2.
